What is Commonplace?
Commonplace helps you save, share, and reflect on meaningful quotes from anything you read, watch, or listen to.
Saving quotes to Commonplace
Quotes can be saved to Commonplace from anywhere — with just a few taps, quotes with source information will be automatically generated.
How do I save a quote from a website or app?
- Open the article in your browser or app
- Highlight the text you want to save
- Tap Copy from the toolbar that appears above highlighted text
- With the text copied to your clipboard, Share the article and select Commonplace
- We’ll automatically pull in the quote and source details
How do I save a quote from a book?
- Tap the + button to create a new quote
- Tap the camera icon from the keyboard toolbar to scan text
- Take a photo of the page, then delete any unnecessary text that was scanned
- Add a source and select Book
- Search for the book in our database
- Select it and add the page number
How do I save a quote from a podcast?
Note — In most major podcast platforms, some podcasts support transcripts, and some do not. This is at the discretion of the podcast host, not the platform.
Spotify:
- Scroll down to the transcript
- Tap Share
- Select the transcript text
- Share to Commonplace
Apple Podcasts:
- Tap the quote icon to open the transcript
- Highlight the text
- Tap Share from {timestamp}
- Select Commonplace
Other podcast apps:
- Share the podcast to Commonplace
- We’ll fill in the source details
- Enter the quote manually
How do I save a quote from a song?
Major music apps (Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube Music, Amazon Music, etc.)
- Scroll to the lyrics section
- Highlight the lyric text
- Share to Commonplace
Other music apps:
- Share the song to Commonplace
- We’ll fill in the source details
- Enter the quote manually
How do I save a quote from an image or screenshot?
- Take a picture or screenshot with text in it
- Share the image to Commonplace
- All text in the image will be extracted and stored in the quote
- Delete any unnecessary text that was scanned
Managing your quotes
Can I add notes to a quote?
Yes, each quote can have a note attached to it for your own thoughts or context.
Can I edit a quote after saving it?
Yes, you can edit the quote text, source, and any notes at any time.
Where are my quotes stored?
Your quotes are saved:
- On your device
- In your account for access across sessions
Sharing
How do I share a quote?
Open a quote and tap the share button to send it as a styled preview or link. To style a quote, you can:
- Edit the background color or select a background image from your source
- Edit the text alignment
- Edit the font
What happens when I share a quote?
Your quote is shared with attribution to its source. Anyone who opens the link can view the quote and be directed to the original content.
Account & settings
How do I change my email or password?
Go to Profile → Account to update your email or password.
I forgot my password — what should I do?
From the login screen, tap Forgot password and follow the instructions sent to your email.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile → Danger Zone → Delete Account.
This will permanently delete your account and all saved data. This action cannot be undone.
Troubleshooting
Why didn’t my quote auto-fill correctly?
Sometimes source data (like article title or author) can’t be detected. You can always edit and complete it manually.
Why can’t I highlight or share text from some apps?
Some apps don’t allow text selection or sharing. In these cases:
- Screenshot the text and share the image to Commonplace and fill out the source information manually or share the source to Commonplace and manually enter the quote
